The Secret Garden
What secrets lie behind the doors at
Misselthwaite Manor? Recently arrived at her uncle's
estate, orphaned Mary Lennox is spoiled, sickly, and
certain she won't enjoy living there. Then she
discovers the arched doorway into an overgrown
garden, shut up since the death of her aunt ten
years earlier. Mary soon begins transforming it into
a thing of beauty--unaware that she is changing too.
But Misselthwaite hides another secret, as Mary
discovers one night. High in a dark room, away from
the rest of the house, lies her young cousin, Colin,
who believes he is an incurable invalid, destined to
die young. His tantrums are so frightful, no one can
reason with him. If only, Mary hopes, she can get
Colin to love the secret garden as much as she does,
it's magic will work wonders on him.

The Ghost Pirates
"The Ghost Pirates . . . is a
powerful account of a doomed and haunted ship on its
last voyage, and of the terrible sea-devils (of
quasi-human aspect, and perhaps the spirits of
bygone buccaneers) that besiege it and finally drag
it down to an unknown fate. With its command of
maritime knowledge, and its clever selection of
hints and incidents suggestive of latent horrors in
nature, this book at times reaches enviable peaks of
power." — H.P. Lovecraft

Legends That Every Child Should
Know
(excerpt)
Now Felice had heard many whisperings
how Guy was dying of love for her, since her
handmaidens had compassion on the youth, and sought
to turn her heart toward him; but Felice was in no
mind to have a page for a lover. Howbeit on this
very night she had a dream, wherein being straitly
enjoined to entreat the youth with kindness as the
only way to save a life which would hereafter be of
great service to the world, she arose and came to a
bower in the garden where Guy lay swooning on the
floor. Felice would not stoop to help him, but her
maids having restored him to his senses, Guy fell at
her feet and poured out all his love before her.
Never a word answered Felice, but stood calmly
regarding him with haughty coldness.

The Monster Men
(excerpt)
As he dropped the last grisly
fragment of the dismembered and mutilated body into
the small vat of nitric acid that was to devour
every trace of the horrid evidence which might
easily send him to the gallows, the man sank weakly
into a chair and throwing his body forward upon his
great, teak desk buried his face in his arms,
breaking into dry, moaning sobs. Beads of
perspiration followed the seams of his high,
wrinkled forehead, replacing the tears which might
have lessened the pressure upon his overwrought
nerves. His slender frame shook, as with ague, and
at times was racked by a convulsive shudder. A
sudden step upon the stairway leading to his
workshop brought him trembling and wide eyed to his
feet, staring fearfully at the locked and bolted
door

Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens
(excerpt)
If you ask your mother whether she
knew about Peter Pan when she was a little girl she
will say, "Why, of course, I did, child," and if you
ask her whether he rode on a goat in those days she
will say, "What a foolish question to ask, certainly
he did." Then if you ask your grandmother whether
she knew about Peter Pan when she was a girl, she
also says, "Why, of course, I did, child," but if
you ask her whether he rode on a goat in those days,
she says she never heard of his having a goat.
Perhaps she has forgotten, just as she sometimes
forgets your name and calls you Mildred, which is
your mother's name. Still, she could hardly forget
such an important thing as the goat. Therefore there
was no goat when your grandmother was a little girl.
This shows that, in telling the story of Peter Pan,
to begin with the goat (as most people do) is as
silly as to put on your jacket before your vest.
